Brace life is treating us pretty good :) Makenna is adjusting beautifully and wears her brace regularly - which means ALL the time unless she is taking a bath. I do give her about 10-15 minutes of time each day without it on, also. Just to let her skin rest. I usually do this in the morning while she's eating breakfast.
She went to her first kid birthday party the other day... she had a blast. It was at a gym and she got to wear her favorite 'bubble' leotard. I sent her without her brace. - I figured it would be good for her strength. She has been the 'little sister' for so long and tagged along with Abby to parties, or left while Abby stayed.... and now it's her turn. She's growing up!
Today, I took her for her six month eye appointment. And it was there that it hit me... just how far we've come. The nurse asked about her head tilt; had it gotten any better? And it just rolled out of my mouth "Well, they corrected her scoliosis. So, that pretty much took care of it." CORRECTED. The word resonated in my head...CORRECTED. As if no one had told me yet. CORRECTED. They did what? CORRECTED HER CURVE? They did!!!
And then, to really drive the point in... the doctor came in. "How's her back?" he asked. "GREAT!" I said. "She's straight". STRAIGHT...
For the first time, in a long time, I feel like we can breath a sigh of relief, relax, and enjoy life. Not that we didn't enjoy life before, but for the past few years there has been an uneasy feeling; wondering what was going to happen next. When was the other shoe going to drop? I don't have that feeling anymore. I know she is not completely out of the woods with her scoliosis. She won't be until she reaches skeletal maturity. But I think we've hit all our major speed bumps.
