Last year when I walked into Makenna's room on her birthday, peaked into her crib and said "Happy Birthday, Makenna!", she looked up at me with her sweet smile and said, "Happy Birthday, Mommy!". Note: we do not share a birthday... We laughed and tried to catch it on film knowing that these moments of pure innocence pass quickly. This year, with the help of big sister Abby, Makenna was much more aware of her approaching birthday, and I thought for sure she had it all figured out. So when I went into her room this morning to wish her a happy birthday, I was expecting a cry of glee for the joyous day, or anxious wonder about when her party was... but instead I was greeted with the same, sweet, "Happy Birthday, Mommy!"
Makenna has a way of reminding me to keep things in perspective. So, although there are times when I am overwhelmed by this whole process and our new reality, and as much as I feel like control is completely slipping away and that things are changing faster than I can keep up; there are so many more things that will remain the same.
This last year has certainly been filled with change, but at the heart of it, it remains the same. Makenna's nature is still just as pure, vivacious and contagious as ever. She brings me calm ~ and strength.
She also reminds me that cast or no cast - tramatic year or not, she is definately three. She utters "no" with an easy defiance, she fights with her sister, and she cries when she doesn't get her way. All of these things are bound to stay the same!
So, my birthday wish for Makenna this year is growth (and lots of it) ...sprout, baby, sprout, patience to deal with frustration whether it be related her sister, her toys, a puzzle, or her cast, and continued laughter because it's contagious.
She amazes me each day! Happy Birthday, Makenna!
